In a recent study from Packaged Facts, a New York-based market research firm, more than half of children between 6 and 8 encourage their folks to purchase green goods. According to their report, "Kids and Tweens in the U.S.," a strong majority of kids, ages 6 to 11 years, state concern for environmental issues. Nearly 75% believe people should recycle, and 40% express favor in buying products made with recycled paper.

It is fantastic and inspiring that tomorrow's leaders already hold these eco expectations. And now parents are taking notice. Let us hope that more manufacturers and retailers follow, answering this demand with diverse and authentic choices that stimulate further growth and surprises.

My experience is in producing board game toys with sustainable measures and eco-friendly in their play themes. Yet I am constantly engaged by the many new green developments in all types of product and service categories. While I embrace the green technology and industries important to shifting society's reliance to better alternatives in daily living, I also see many "fringe" ideas that will also collectively make a difference. I'm already eager to go steps beyond the hybrid vehicles, compact fluorescent lightbulbs, etc. And then I'd love to see the progress around the corner from those new practices and products.

Of course, parents will continue an important role in educating children exposed to commercials or any passive communication device. Sifting through various marketing messages to match with their family's values and the personal principles has been around long before the environmental movement. But perhaps it will now be the children who are influential in turning an aspect of commerce around and help promote choices with greater responsibility to the planet. It's a new world and I would not be surprised if our most innocent, and honest, citizens lead us.

That is so true! My 3-year old daughter was with me in Target and pointed out a Greenworks cleaner bottle and said "good for the ert"... I knew what she meant - she really pays attention and recognized the design on the bottle. We had purchased the Greenworks All purpose cleaner - she pointed out the bathroom cleaner - so I bought it. She's right - It is "good for the ert!"
