About
OVERVIEW
Founder's story
Launched in late 2007, the founders of Autonomie Project were inspired by the lack in the social marketplace of a truly wearable & affordable ethical clothing brand. With the strong desire to effect positive change in our world, these few good friends set off to start a small company with big dreams that aligned with the values of the growing grass-roots movement towards global sustainability. Autonomie Project’s mission is to supply high-quality, stylish garments to consumers that seek to make purchases that align with their values without having to sacrifice their own personal style. All while making a positive social impact on our earth and raising awareness about today’s most pressing global issues.
The team that began the company is still the force behind it and hopes to make a positive impact on our environment, the global apparel industry, and the economic practices of the US.
Our mission
Autonomie Project is a new Fair Trade fashion company offering stylish sweatshop-free & eco-friendly footwear, clothing and accessories. It has been proven time and time again that the only viable response to the issues of sweatshops and child labor is to establish favorable commerce in which a worker can depend on a reliable, fair trade that will end the cycle of poverty. Autonomie Project is working to do just that.
We provide our workers with a fair wage so they can beat sweatshops while providing our customers with competitively priced style.
We work exclusively with small, independent cooperatives and Fair Trade certified facilities located in developing areas of the world. We use organic cotton, all natural FSC rubber, and other eco-friendly materials whenever possible to lessen our environmental impact.
We assist our workers with the development and marketing of their products so that they may prosper and lead sustainable lifestyles. By introducing them to US consumers like you, we can empower these disadvantaged workers to become thriving participants in a reconfigured global marketplace. Our products are relevant and fashionable for today’s market, always vegan , always eco, and always sweatshop-free so that you can wear your values and still look good!
Our philosophy
To promote ethical shopping choices by connecting conscious consumers with small producer groups around the developing world that typically lack access to the marketplace. To educate all consumers that they have a choice and the power to make purchases that align with their values and help support positive changes in our world.
The types of products we sell
Shoes, hand bags, flip flops, t-shirts, and children's apparel. As we grow, we look forward to expanding our collection to include even more fashions, shoes and apparel for both adults and children.
Where the producers live and work
We support independent small-scale producers from all over the world. Our current suppliers live and work in Sri Lanka (they bring us the rubber for the shoes and flip flops); Pakistan (they make our sneakers); Peru (they crochet our hand bags); USA (they make our t-shirts); and India (children's apparel).
Projects we support
We work with Trees for the Future, Coop America, TransFair USA, and the Talon Workers Welfare Fund to lessen our environmental impact and to add extra support to our workers and their communities.
How we select what we sell
We are very careful when choosing a new product line. We make sure that all new products are of the highest quality and construction possible. We make sure that the items are comfortable, fashionable, and beautiful to wear. We will say 'no' to a product that is not made under Fair Trade conditions or is made with conventional materials unless there are no eco-friendly material options close to the producer group's location and the materials local to the producer group support their local economy.
What makes us unique
We monitor our products all the way down the supply chain. The workers at every level of production, including the sourcing of the fabrics and materials, are protected by Fair Trade standards. Eco-friendly practices are employed whenever possible at our business's operational level as well as at the manufacturing level of all of our suppleirs. We also plant trees to offset our carbon emissions and aim to be as carbon neutral as possible.
